Aloha, Bob
Runners,
As you all are probably painfully aware the race will soon be upon us. Your race committee has been putting the finishing touches on this year's event and it promises to once again be an incredible event with tons of fabulous runners and volunteers. Please take a couple of minutes to read the following update:
1) Bob and Barbi McAllaster will be serving as aid station captains for Nuuanu. Please extend a warm welcome to the two of them for their bravery of such an undertaking.
2) Please review the race rules and procedures. Recently we have answered a ton of e-mail questions on items that are clearly described in the rules. It's not that we don't want to talk to you folks but our time is occupied with other details of the event. We kindly ask your cooperation in this matter. We will be happy to answer question not answered in the rule book.
3) One change not noted in the book is that CREWS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED AT THE MANOA (PARADISE PARK) AID STATION ON THE FIRST LOOP. We ran into problems last year with parking on the initial loop. Therefore, please plan accordingly this year.
4) Succeed Ultra has been selected as the drink that will be served at the aid stations.
That about does it for now. Continued success with your training.
Jeff & John
Aloha Runners,
Attached is the updated entrant list (111207) for the H.U.R.T. 100 to be run on January 19-20, 2008. Click here to view the list. We will attempt to add runners off the wait list to fill the spots of those who feel that they will not be able to participate up until 11/15/07. Please note that there are less than a handful of runners on the wait list, as we have been filling slots fast and furious for those opting out (therefore chance for a refund are running out). Please contact PJ HURTPALS@aol.com ASAP if you would like to pull out of the race, or if there are any corrections to your personal information.
Mahalo,
John & Jeff
Aloha Runners,
We hope that this post finds you all well, and eagerly training hard for your much anticipated effort at the H.U.R.T. 100 in January. We want to take the opportunity to inform you of a few informational items that will help you as you proceed towards the starting line.
1.) The drop date is fast approaching (November 15th), and at this time we have no intention of changing it (however it is still a possibility). We have nearly cleared the wait listed runners and accepted them into the run. If you would like to drop out of the race and receive a refund it must be done before 11/15/07 and we must be able to place a runner into your slot. If you are interested in taking this avenue please get in touch with PJ at HURTPALS@AOL.com as soon as possible.
2.) We are in the process of working out an agreement with The Willows for the post race dinner (non hosted). If you have not been to this event in the past we would encourage you to attend. The event will be held on January 21, 2008. More details will follow as we get closer to race date.
3.) We have decided to do away with the medical identification band. In the past we have utilized the band to record the runner's name and weight. However, since we no longer mandate weight measurements the band is no longer needed. Runner's dropping out of the race will simply have their run number removed. We will have a scale available for runner's who wish to track their weight.
4.) We are in the process of identifying a new electrolyte drink for the race. The final choice will be either Gatorade, Succeed Ultra (Karl King Product), or Gu2O (GU Product). Again, we will notify you folks via this site to inform you of the final decision.
5.) As you all know it takes a lot of volunteers to put on an event of this magnitude. In the very near future we will be soliciting volunteers for such things as trail marking, aid station help, possible safety patrol, trail ribbon pulling, etc. Once the aid station captains have met and identified their needs we will be posting those items to this site.
As the race draws near more items will be posted here. Until then continued good training and health.
Aloha,
Jeff & John
Aloha Runners,
As you all know the H.U.R.T. 100 has reached it's entry capacity, and we have pulled the application from the various sites that we utilized to get the application out to you folks. Since a few applications were printed out and subsequently post marked prior to pulling the application we have established a wait list for those runners whose applications we recieved after the event was deemed full. Rest assured that race management wants to have 100 entrants start the race. In years past once the race sold out, we no longer accepted applications, nor did we refund entry fees or establish a wait list. In short the number of starters at the event was below that of the actual entry limit. To help mitigate the above we have decided to implement the following:
WAIT LIST PROCEDURE:
NAME CORRECTION PROCEDURE:
Once again, Mahalo for all the support.
Jeff & John
Aloha Runners,
I just received notice that the 2008 race is full and the application is no longer available. Watch this site for additional information and the updated listing over the next few days. We are very surprised at the entrant response rate this year. Thank you to all of those who have applied early.
Aloha, Bob
Aloha Runners,
We hope that this post finds you all well and gearing up on your H.U.R.T. training. PJ has been receiving applications hand over fist for the event and we will soon be at capacity. John and I decided today that as we get closer to capacity we will be removing the application from the site. Therefore, we would encourage you all to reach out to your friends and have them get their applications in so they don't miss out on running in a premier event. Once again thank you for all your continued support and confidence. Now get training!
Jeff and John
With much anticipation, the 2008 H.U.R.T. 100 race application is here. I have received inquires from all across the U.S. and from as far away as Iraq, asking when the application will be available.
It's here. Yep, or click here and get your application in. As I said before, your training runs and commitment will definitely take on a new dimension once you send in the application and entry fee. There is something about setting a goal and making a commitment that motivates most people to strive a little harder.
We look forward to seeing you in January!!
Aloha Runners,
I see the timer counting down to the much anticipated day of June 19, 2007. I have been informed by Bob that this site will have the 2008 H.U.R.T. 100 application available at 12:01 a.m.on 6/19/07. You just might want to set your alarms and be the first to print it out, and get in the morning mail. However, before you go through all that trouble we would like you to do the following. As many of you know we don't believe in many rules and we really do want to keep things simple, but the following are must do items;
1.) Read the Runner's Rules and procedures on the site before signing and sending your application. We have adopted a couple new things this year and we will hold the runner's responsible.
2.) Print out the application and fill it out in it's entirety. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
3.) Print legibly, so that PJ can make sure we get the appropriate spelling of your name.
4.) Enclose a check for $140.00. We will not hold spots without funds.
5.) Mail your completed entry ASAP.
A canceled check will be your proof of acceptance into the race. We will provide periodic updates with the accepted runner list on this site and let you know how many slots are still available. Please be patient as this process is normally done during all of our leisure hours.
Wishing you all the best. Thank you for considering the H.U.R.T. 100 for your 2008 calendar.
Aloha,
Jeff Huff
H.U.R.T. 100
The 2008 H.U.R.T. 100 Trail Race application will be available on June 19th, seven months from the start of the race. Get ready runners. Send those applications in early. We anticipate the race to fill quickly this year so we encourage you to send your application in as soon as possible.
One thing to note, when you make the commitment of sending in your application, your commitment to train will also go up knowing that you'll be spending a beautiful weekend in Hawaii come January. Don't hesitate, there are only 100 slots for runners.
You are at the home for the H.U.R.T. 100. Our next race is January 19, 2008. The start time is 6:00 a.m. This site will feature information specifically related and limited to the H.U.R.T. 100. If you are interested in more general information related to trail and ultra running in Hawaii, please check out our main site, H.U.R.T. Hawaii, by clicking here.

Aloha All,
We would like to encourage those of you who ran H.U.R.T. 100 this year to submit an article to Ultrarunning. Don Allison wants to feature H.U.R.T. in the April issue, therefore he needs submission by February 27. For those interested you can find the submission info here http://www.ultrarunning.com/ultra/about/submissions.shtml . Please submit directly to Ultrarunning.
Make it as short or long as you like. We will forward on our own story of the event with pictures and results, but the more stories the better. Eagerly looking forward to reading your accounts of the event.
Aloha,
Jeff Huff
Here's a couple of e-mails received lately. One is thanking us for the support during the HURT 100 and the other is thanking us for a training run.
Hello to Everyone who helped with H.U.R.T #7
I would like to thank everyone that helped with the H.U.R.T. 7. Each aid station person was so helpful and encouraging. I felt like I had a top ranked NASCAR pit crew getting me in and out of the aid stations. I also learned quite a bit during the run, poor choice in hydration pack - it was to hard for the aid station folks to fill, should have bought gaiters, diced Power Bars and boiled potatoes are the best food on the planet after 20 miles or so, company in the dark is nice even if it is brief, the mud from the trail is impervious to washing - but I have a cool set of brown tied dyed socks and matching singlet now and going downhill for a flatlander is much easier than uphill. Following the run I logged onto the Ultrarunning website and have planned the rest of my 2007 calendar year runs. It would be an honor if I was allowed to participate in your event again in 2008, hopefully wiser and maybe a little faster.
You folks run the best event I have ever participated in. The spirit of Aloha lives within each of you, thanks for all your hard work getting an event like this to completion.
Mahalo

Hi Bob,
We want to thank everyone who supported the 2007 HURT 100. Putting on a race like this would be extremely difficult without the generous support from many people and organizations.
Please click here to read about everyone who helped.
As many of you know, Paul Sibley had his own reasons for completing the HURT 100 this year. A year ago, he pulled out after being diagnosed with cancer. Click this link to view his success in 2007.
Leon Draxler sent me a disc with a lot of great photo's from the HURT 100. Some are a bit dark but they show great shots of the trails and of the runners.
Click here to view the photos.
Thanks Leon!
I'm back on the mainland but I wanted to point out to the blog that David Carlsson not only completed 100k at HURT but a week later placed 'first' in the Hilo to Volcano run in case you guys didn't know. Great work for a guy who a month ago was just trying to get under 3 hours at Honolulu Marathon (and he did). I'm pretty sure this is the same guy (last name misspelled in Big Dog's results) as I talked to him before the race and he is the only David in the finishers. He was camping near Akaka Falls and said ran into the New Mexico HURT runners.
I was still sore and could barely stay ahead of the Cowman though it was nice to have a course with only a few banyan roots in the first ½ mile.

Congratulations to all the 100M and 100K finishers at the HURT Trail 100 this past weekend. You were all fantastic out there!
For any successful race, there are many behind-the-scene individuals who put great time and effort into making everything come together.
I would like to extend a heartfelt “Mahalo” to the following individuals and their -Aid Station crews:
Vernon Char, Carolyn Hayashi, and crew did another outstanding job at Paradise Park in Manoa. Vernon has run this aid station for every HURT - his early morning pancakes are legendary!
John and PJ worked very, very hard at Nature Center to track runners and get them back out on the course, certainly no easy task. Their traditional Kalua Pig sandwiches made great fuel for many entrants.
Don Fallis and volunteers marked the course before race day, then returned Monday to take everything down. Don worked hard to keep the timing board updated.
Without Joel Jenkins and his Medical crew’s hard work, many runners would have called it a day and gone home to nurse their blisters and aches. Joel was literally everywhere! His professionalism and attention to detail is second to none.
As for Mudd Butt’s Café in Nuuanu, I owe a deep debt to Patricia Carroll, who was my right hand. Besides putting up with my planning for the entire year preceding HURT, Trish packed all runner bags, helped at the pre-race check-in, and assembled the post-race lucky draw gifts. She then worked the aid station for +36 hours from the initial set-up. Trish made sure runners got their drop bags and assisted with timing and tracking of runners. I believe her when she said running the race is easier!
Mae Martinez and Vanessa Huff also worked the entire 36 hours – their organization and constant attention to detail amazed me! Mae also helped purchase much of the necessary supplies for our aid station. At Mudd Butt’s Café, Mae kept the supplies organized and the food flowing in the food tent. If you have every wondered where those lovely Hawaiian Print bags come from, Mae sews each one!
Vanessa kept up our timing sheet, updated the runner board, and worked with the Ham Radio operators for the entire race. Her wonderful kids, Katie and Matthew, along with Bryson took injured runners back to NC and made our pizza run. Vanessa also took care of her hubby, the “Huffer”, when he pulled in… again, no easy task!
Neil and Marian Yasuda not only worked in the morning, but they also paced local runners on loop #3. The Yasudas then returned Sunday morning to help break everything down and transport gear back to the NC.
Fellow runner, Freddy Halmes was the maestro in our kitchen, keeping runners fed and hydrated. Freddy had so much fun he stayed through the evening until Sunday morning!
Good friend Christine Shiinoke flew in from San Francisco, just to work the aid station on Saturday. She then geared up to pace Steph on loop #3. What an animal!
My fellow worker Clinton Wong, dropped in early Saturday morning to help set up the lights and anything electrical – his expertise was most appreciated!
Toby Kravet, our esteemed bell ringer, did a wonderful job. We certainly knew when runners were approaching the aid station! Next time we will give him a kazoo to go along with the bell.
Peggy Regentine, Stote Farnham, Jane Sarven, Heather McCafferty, Johnny Landeza, Les Omura, Jim Carr, and Naomi Sakai did a fantastic job keeping the liquids flowing and the runners going! A very special thanks to Jane for filling up our water cans and returning later in the evening to work some more. Jonathan Miller came Sunday afternoon to help with breakdown and clean-up.
Almost all our workers are long-time road and or trail runners who graciously gave up their free time to help. Thank you all so much for your time and assistance!
Mike
We're still missing an iPod Shuffle. Now that all of you have had time to get home and unpack all of your race bags, did anyone find an iPod Shuffle? We sure would like it back, no questions asked.
They are so small, it would be easy to miss. The last I saw it, I gave it to Barbi at the end of Loop 2/Start of Loop 3, at the Nature Center and she was putting it in a ziplock bag. She thought it ended up in my drop bag. Unfortunately it did not. I feel really bad since it was hers and I was borrowing it for the race.
So how are your legs? I got out and ran this morning. My legs are fine, I just found myself getting winded fast. I thought that was strange.
Aloha, Bob
Hawaii runner Arturs Pridanovs was out on the trails during the HURT 100 and around some of the aid stations taking lots (200+) of photographs. Click here to view. Click on the first one to enlarge it.
He got some great shots. Fun for me to see as I get to see everyone else. If you see something you like here, I might be able to e-mail you the original if you ask nice. :-)
For those whose shots are a bit blurry, you were just moving way to fast!
Thanks Arturs!
Enjoy.

Lots of last minute race preparation going on today. Trails are being marked, aid station supplies are being packed and rechecked, and some of us are still organizing our drop bags.
We've got the pre-race meeting this afternoon (3:30 p.m. at the Nature Center) which is always fun as it is a great time to see all the runners prior to the start.
Important Note: To communicate with this site during the race, use the comments feature and click on comments after each post. Race volunteers will be busy and with the addition of HAM radio volunteers, we hope to be able to offer regular and frequent updates. I will be running so I will obviously not be checking my e-mail until Monday.
Good luck to all the runners!! Aloha, Bob

We will continue the tradition of having the post-race dinner at the Willows Restaurant in Honolulu. Please let us know at the pre-race meeting if you are coming so we can get an estimate of how many people will be attending. This dinner is a great time to connect with other runners and crew, tell and listen to all of the race stories, and just relax in the great atmosphere of the Willows after the race. A lot of people showed up for today's fun run--the last trail run before the HURT 100. There was a minor glitch at the beginning as the lower gate to the Nature Center parking lot was locked until past 7:00 a.m. Finally a resident who lives up there was leaving and opened the gate. Many of us were just parked on the road below the gate.
Though it was raining at the start and the sky looked threatening, we had no rain on our ten mile loop. With all the rain we have had this past week, the course was pretty wet and muddy. I was surprised how much blow-down there was of trees. Obviously it's been windy up there this past week as well.
When we finished the loop, we came across the HURT Race Directors and crew. They were discussing race details and some HAM radio operators were testing their equipment. That's cool that we will have the HAM radio folks helping us out this year. We should be able to communicate much more effectively between aid stations and also be able to post good updates here for those following the race on-line.
Get lots of rest this week, eat healthy, and pack those drop bags, and see you at the pre-race meeting! Aloha, Bob
Scroll Down This Page for the Latest HURT 100 Updates. The most recent RACE UPDATE will always be posted right under this post.
Welcome to the information page for the HURT 100 Mile Endurance Run on January 13 and 14. The race starts on Saturday at 6:00 a.m. Hawaiian time (-10H GMT) . There is a 36 hour time limit and all racers must be off the course by 6:00 p.m. Sunday. There are 100 entrants in the 2007 race. Runners/Bib Numbers
The course consists of 5 times around a 20 mile loop. HURT Course Map. The course has very little flat sections and runners are usually running either up or down a hill. Additionally, the trails are covered with lots of roots and rocks. Course Elevation Profile.
There are three aid stations. The first aid station is at Paradise Park in the back of Manoa Valley. The second aid station is at Jackass Ginger in Nuuanu Valley and the third aid station is the start/finish at the Hawaii Nature Center in Makiki Valley. The distance between each aid station is between 5.4 and 7.3 miles.
On the right side of this site are other links related to the race. Please check back once the race starts as we will update the site with runner positions.
A minor update (One slot changed) to the previously announced bib number list of entrants. Click here to see the latest entrant list with bib numbers.
A small trails update for our mainland friends. I did repeats on the lower loop yesterday and the trail was nice and dry. I had good running conditions, not too humid and a nice breeze going up Hogsback.
It rained pretty steady last night and has been raining off and on today with lots of wind. Overall, the trails are in pretty good shape though this can change quickly depending on the weather.
For those interested in large waves, the N. shore is getting hit by large stormy swells that are projected to continue into the New Year. The swell projected to hit Jan. 1 and 2 is supposed to be huge, the largest this winter so far, maybe in the 25 - 30 foot range.
Aloha, Bob
OK, here it is, the 2007 Entrants List with Bib Numbers. Click here to view. The race is just 18 days away. I hope you're ready! (??)
Watch for more updates on this site as the race gets closer. We will be reconfiguring the site to focus on the HURT 100 race.
Important H.U.R.T. VII 100 Update
We have had several informational inquiries about this year’s race. Below are some of the answers that we have been sharing with runners about this year’s event.
Runners have asked whether or not there were going to be any impromptu aid stations at H.U.R.T. this year. For those who ran last year there were two such places on the course; Pauoa Flats and the Grassy Knoll at Nuuanu. After considerable deliberation it has been decided that there will continue to be only three official aid stations for runners to get aid from. The aid stations are the same as those listed in the runners handbook and they are; Nature Center, Paradise Park, and Jackass Ginger (Nuuanu). Race management, in an effort to assure that all competitors have equal access to the same aid station supplies and to promote an evenly contested event, thereby prohibits accepting aid at any point on the course that is not designated as an aid station. Such places include but are not limited to Pauoa Flats, Nuuanu Grassy Knoll and any road crossing. As stated in the handbook, runners found to be accepting aid at non designated aid station will be disqualified from the event. Also please remember that stashing of supplies along the course is prohibited.
Course maps and driving maps are available in the handbook. It is advisable that each contestant print out the maps for their use. A limited amount of maps will be made available at the pre race brief. Despite race management’s efforts to provide you with a well marked course, course maps are highly recommended as marking tape has been known to disappear during events. Competitors would also be wise to only seek directions from those associated with the race.
Drop bags will not be accepted at the pre race brief. Please bring them with you on the morning of the event.
The final entrant log is being compiled. Once complete race bib numbers will be assigned and posted to the H.U.R.T. blog.
An after run banquet is being planned for the Willows Restaurant on January 15, 2007. This is a non hosted optional event which is not included in your entry fee. More details will be forthcoming on the Blog as a head count is needed.
Runners,
Thank you all. Over the last couple weeks we have received an incredible amount of applications for the 2007 edition of the H.U.R.T. 100. It has been 7 years in the making, but we are proud to announce that this year's event has filled to capacity. As such, we are no longer accepting applications since all 100 bib numbers have been accounted for. It appears that the
H.U.R.T. 100 has finally come of age in the eyes of the ultrarunning community. On behalf of the H.U.R.T. 100 we thank you all for the continued interest and belief in our event. For those of you who have missed out on the opportunity to run with arguably one of H.U.R.T.'s deepest fields we encourage you to enter the 2008 edition of the event (application available in June 07). Remember we have no lottery, nor do we have any rigid entry guidelines. The only requirement for you the runner is to "give a little Aloha, and to get a little Aloha."
Mahalo for the continued support. We will be posting an updated list in a few days.
Much Aloha
Huffer
Aloha Athletes !
Thanks for the response thus far. However, like the Marines, we still need a few good men (and women) for trail marking on Friday morning January 12 and un-marking on Monday January 15, 2007. No experience necessay, and it will give you a new perspective of the HURT 100 course, not to mention the fact that it's fun. Since I will be off island until January 1, 2007, please contact PJ Salmonson at 235-0577 or e-mail her at hurtpals@aol.com or you can contact me after January 1 at 247-4144 or expo@hawaii.rr.com . Mahalo, Don
Anyone notice that the countdown timer says 30 days until the HURT 100 (as of 12/14)? Yikes!! I am beginning to think maybe seeing that every day is not such a good thing. What do you think? Certainly motivates me to keep focused on the race.
The latest update to race entrants can be seen here. There are only a couple of more spots left. If you haven't got your application in yet, don't delay. In fact, you had better contact John and PJ ASAP!
Aloha HURT 100 Athletes !
In case you missed the nice, detailed post by Bob McAllaster last week (click here to review it), describing the 50 mile training run this Saturday, the following is a repeat of the plan.
This Saturday is the big day for 50 miles of HURT 100 training ! The day starts at 5:00 am at the mauka end of Manoa Rd. (before it narrows heading back into Paradise Park) where you will first go to Nuuanu/Jackass Ginger and then via the race route to the Nature Center. At this point you will interrupt your initial HURT loop by doing a 10 mile reverse Trek loop, restock your water and food, and head back to Paradise Park to complete the first HURT loop. At this point you will have completed 30 miles. All that's left at this point is another measly 20 mile HURT loop to finish off the day. Estimated completion times will depend entirely on the individual runner. A back-of--the-pack runner (36 hour HURT 100 finish) can expect to finish this 50 miles in around 16 hours, while a Karl Meltzer-type will be in the car driving home in 9 hours, or so. There will be limited water stashed at a couple of locations, so if you plan to do the training (or if you have any questions), please call Cheryl Loomis at 277-4960 to let her know you will be there and would like water stashed for you.
Please plan on bringing (or stashing) everything you will need, as this training run will primarily be unsupported. Don't forget flashlights/headlights.
Have fun !
Another update and we're up to 88 runners. Click here to see the entire list. Nine more people just added to the list. How's your training coming along?
It's a very wet, windy, and soggy day here in Hawaii. I know we shouldn't complain given the weather this past week on much of the mainland.
Nothing like 30 miles out on the HURT course to bring you back to reality in regards to fitness and training. Glad I got my run in yesterday. I think Steve Dewald and Mike Muench were probably glad as well given today's weather.
We even canceled our trail work day due to the weather. No use going out and digging in the mud. Chances are we would have just made it worse.
Congratulations to all those who got into Western States. The lottery was today and Hawaii runners selected include, Cheryl Loomis, Steve Dewald, and Jeff Huff. Former Hawaii resident, Judy Carluccio also got in. For all of you who didn't get in--there are lots of other races out there.
Finally, by not being out training, I got to see UCLA upset USC. Wow, what a game. Looking forward to Hawaii versus Oregon State tonight.
As a heads up, next weekend is the Honolulu Marathon and a lot of HURT runners will be pounding the pavement in this race. The following weekend on Saturday, December 16th, HURT runners will be running a 50 mile training day. Plan on a 5:00 a.m. start and lots of hours on the trail. Watch the blog for more details.
Good training and stay dry out there.
Another update to the 2007 HURT 100 entrants list and five more runners added to the list. This latest update includes the 2006 HURT 100 winner, Karl Meltzer. Click here to see the update.
How's your training going? Are you getting in some long mileage days?
Our weather has been very pleasant lately--with daytime high temperature's reaching to the low 80's and evening temp's cooling off to the low 60's. Perfect training weather. It should be about the same in January. Time to get those applications in!!
Aloha Athletes !
PJ and I will be putting together a HURT 100 trail marking team. Organizing will begin in earnest the week of December 8-15, 2006, so if you are interested, please plan on contacting either one of us that week. Trail marking is planned to be done the morning of Friday, January 12, 2007, with marking removal planned for Monday, January 15, 2007. Contact info, specific times and meeting places to follow on the blog.
Please make your plans now. Your help is much appreciated. Mahalo, Don
The latest update is 7 more entrants for a total of 74 entries to date. Some of the latest entrants are HURT veterans and others are in for their first taste of the HURT 100. Luis Escobar is included in this update. Luis won the first HURT 100 in 2001. Click here to see the latest update.
The list keeps getting longer, seven more applicants this update. In addition to our Canadian friends, we also have entrants from both Japan and the UK.
Time to get those app's in. Remember the price goes up after December 5--if there is any more room. The race has a cap of 100 runners.
The pigs have been out in force. I heard stories over the weekend of a couple of different runners coming face to face with pigs who think the trails belong to them. Also saw some pig hunters, who unfortunately seemed to be spending more time looking for their lost dog, then hunting.
Click here to see the latest entrants. Good training!
Ultra running is unique in that many races allow the use of pacers or someone to run with a race participant after a certain designated distance or time. For the HURT 100, pacers are allowed anytime after 5:00 p.m. on Saturday or after 60 miles.
The HURT 100 is scheduled for January 13 & 14, 2007 and is run on some very challenging trails in the Makiki-Tantalus trail system. Most runners will be spending 12 hours or so running in the dark and for many runners, close to 36 hours on the trails. A pacer can be a great help to runners both at night and on Sunday.
If you are at all interested in pacing a runner at the HURT 100, Don Fallis is going to be keeping a list of people interested in pacing. The purpose of this list is to just make it available to runners interested in having a pacer for the race.
Please contact Don if you are interested in pacing. You can e-mail him by clicking here.
Wow, 10 more entries this week! The participants number about 60 already for the January race. This week's additions include both HURT veteran's and first timers. Remember the entry fee goes up in about a month, so time to get those applications in. Click here to see the latest list of entrants.
Have a great training weekend! Aloha, Bob
Training for HURT takes time, lots of time. We all have busy schedules and try to fit the training in as best we can. This year I have noticed people are training both day and night, whenever they can. I know it is not always possible to train with a group or even with another person, however please use some common sense while training.
Being out on the trails is inherently dangerous. One miss-step or slip could have you taking a tumble. Often times these slips end as bruises, bumps, or scratches. Fortunately, we have not had anything serious. Many of the trails are in bad shape with overgrown foliage making it tough to always see the next step. Think about some basic safety items if you are out training. Carry your phone if alone during the day and especially at night. What about an emergency whistle and small back-up flashlight (even during the day)? How about some minimal first aid supplies? Do you have something that could stop some serious bleeding from a big gash?
If you are out there alone, let someone know when and where you are starting at, your route, and when you expect to be finished. Better yet, find someone to train with. It's more fun and makes the time go faster. You can also help pick each other up during the low times of those 10-12 + hour training runs!
I don't want to sound alarmist and I am certainly not wanting any of this to happen, it just makes common sense. I've been out on the trails with other people out there and it still can be hours before you see another person. I remember a couple of years ago when a well known, very tough, and experienced local runner, took a bad fall going down into Paradise and limped out using bamboo as crutches.
Training supplies. We found out this past Saturday that not everyone knows where supplies are located. We don't mind others using the water and Gatorade however I know it is often the same people purchasing and dropping supplies. Don't be afraid to offer up some cash ($5 or $10) to Cheryl (or Rex) or to volunteer to drop supplies yourself. Also please note, the water and Gatorade are usually for everyone, however some people drop special drinks--Redbull, Amp, etc. These are not for everyone. If you want this, either make arrangements to purchase for yourself or drop on your own. If you are out training and you notice the supplies are low or gone, please contact someone off list. It's no fun to go into Nuuanu expecting to find water and instead find empty containers. Finally, let's make sure we do our part to keep the trails clean. If you see empty containers or other rubbish on the trails, let's try to pack it out. I am amazed at how inconsiderate some people are when they leave junk on the trails. Who do they think is going to pick it up?
I think we have a very unique training group here in Hawaii and all of you are what make it special. Let's keep supporting each other as we train for HURT.
Good training and be safe out there! Aloha, Bob
This week's list has seven more HURT 100 participants added to it. Click here to see the full list. New runners added this week include Monica Scholz & Fred Davis. Monica and Fred have participated in every HURT 100 race. Also added, Krissy Moehl. Krissy has been to HURT in the past however I believe this will be her first year to run the race.
The list shows lots of good runners signing up for the HURT 100. Hawaii runners were out training again Friday night and Saturday. Given the heavy rain on Oahu last week, the trails were in pretty good shape.
Click here for the HURT 100 application.
As announced earlier (original announcement), we ran a contest for the best short promo or endorsement of the HURT 100. There were four entries received. Click here to read all of the entries. It was a hard decision as they were really all well written.
The winning entry, Jimmy Wrublik! Congratulations Jimmy. Thanks to our other contributors, Peter Bakwin, Jeff Genova, and Matt Stevens.
Click here for the latest HURT 100 participant list. One returning HURT 100 participant, in fact she has been at every HURT 100, Catra Corbett, just won the PCTR San Francisco 24 hour race. She was first woman and 5th overall. Watch out for Catra at HURT. She's been doing great at lots of races!!
The Hawaii runners were out in force this past Friday night putting in the miles and testing out their lighting systems. There were at least 10 - 12 runners out on various sections of the HURT course. If you have a good base built up, there is still time to get your application in. Click here for an application.
Here's the latest HURT 100 applicant's list. Click here to view it. Included in this list are three HURT veterans. One of them, Nick Kaiser is off to do the Kona Ironman this coming weekend.
Remember the HURT 100 gives you an opportunity to get that first 100 mile race under your belt early in 2007. Start the year off by spending some time on the trails in Hawaii. Get those applications in!!
Click here to view the latest entrant list for the HURT 100. Just a couple of observations. I think I counted 12 different states represented so far (not counting Hawaii)--in other words participants are coming from all over the U.S. Where's our Canadian participants? Our one applicant (to date) and past participant, Charlotte has withdrawn for this year. Click here for the application.
Don't forget, average January temperatures in Hawaii range from 80 degrees F. with a low of 67 degrees F.
There has been some phone calls and e-mails from others expressing interest. I know many participants are working on strength and endurance training and building that base of miles. What are you doing for training this weekend?
The HURT 100 Race has added formal time cutoffs to Lap 5 of the 2007 race. The race booklet covering rules and procedures has been updated to reflect this change. Click here for the complete booklet.
Essentially what these changes say is this:
Runners must start Lap 5 at the Nature Center by 1100 (mile 80) Paradise Park cutoff is 1330 (mile 87) and Jackass Ginger by 1530 (mile 92.5). The finish line will close at exactly 1800. All runners must check out of the aid stations by these times or be pulled from the race.
Here's the updated list for this week. Several new names added. Lots of people showing their commitment to training and preparation early for the January race. Click here to see the updated list.
For previous HURT 100 runners, don't forget the opportunity for free entry into this years race. All you need to do is write up a really good endorsement or promo of the race. Click here for details. The deadline for this contest (October 1) is fast approaching.
Get out there and RUN!!
Another week and a few more familiar names have been added to the 2007 HURT 100 list. Click here to view the participant list. Among the names, the following HURT runners: recent Tahoe Rim 100 Finisher Stephanie Jenkins, plus Harald Eberling, and Clem Aleka-Gorai.
Click here for the application. January 2007 will be here before you know it!
A few more familiar names have been added to 2007 HURT 100 entry list. 2006 HURT 100 finishers Cheryl Loomis and David Goggins are two new names added to this update. Click here to see the list.
Now is the time to make that commitment and start putting in the base miles to prepare you for the HURT 100. Click here to get the application.
There have been a couple of really good write-ups this year by past runners of the HURT 100-Mile Endurance Run posted to the Ultra list. We got permission from the authors to post them on our site because these are so well written that they really read like advertisements or promos for the race. (Click here to read them) Thanks Peter and Jimmy!
Because of this, we have decided to offer a contest that will be open from now until October 1st. The best written (under 200 words) promo or endorsement of the HURT 100 race will receive a free entry into the 2007 race. The winning entry will be chosen by three HURT members. By the way, Peter and Jimmy's entrys will be considered for this contest! The winner will be notified by October 15th.
Winning entries may not be transferred. If the runner can't participate in the 2007 race, the entry can be used at the race in 2008 (However, no extensions beyond 2008). All entries may be posted on the HURT site. E-mail all entries to kailuamac@yahoo.com
I was just thinking that now would be a good time to let people know that now is the time to commit to training for the HURT 100 in January 2007. Today, after receiving the first list of participants, I am even more motivated to write this. This list (click here to view) shows that these 15 people are motivated, committed and serious about completing the HURT 100 in January.
It's five months away and if you have ever considered doing something like this, now is the time to start building those base miles, strengthening those legs, and getting yourself physically and mentally ready for this race. If you live here on Oahu, feel free to join us on our weekly training runs. We will get you in shape for the race and share our knowledge with you. If you live on the mainland, get training and we'll see you in January! Here's a link to the application.
I received the 2007 HURT 100 application and other files from Jeff Huff and have updated the links on the right hand column of this site under HURT 100 Race Links.
This year, the application form is a pdf document with data fields that can be filled out on your computer so we have a nice legible form. Click here for the application. Please note it requires a copy of Adobe Acrobat reader which almost everyone has. However, click here if you need to download Acrobat.
The only file not yet available is the Rules and Procedures. This will be available for download soon as it is still being reviewed for any changes that may need to be made for 2007.
I've heard from HURT runners who have returned from races on the mainland, that there is already talk among mainland runners about who might be coming out to race in 2007. After the performance last year of Karl Meltzer and Beverly Anderson-Abbs, the HURT 100 continues to grow in interest and popularity.
Get your application in early (limited to 100 runners) and commit to training for this tough race!
Bob Murphy sent me a link to an article about H.U.R.T. 100 Finisher, David Goggins and his quest to run Badwater and to do it as a charity.

Remember South African, Lisa de Speville? She has been writing about a grueling (read that as sounding really fun to me) adventure race at the southern tip of South America.
The Patagonia Expedition Race covers some of the most remote and unpopulated areas of southern Chile. Click here to read more about this great adventure.
As members of the H.U.R.T. Ohana, we would like to extend our heartfelt “Mahalo nui loa” to the following companies and individuals who so generously donated gifts and helped to make HURT VI a great success! Click here to see the list.
Click here for a race report from Beverly Anderson-Abbs. Beverly was first woman and third overall finisher in the 2006 H.U.R.T. 100 Mile Endurance run setting a new record for women with a time of 27:28.
To use a "huffism", the HURT 100 VI was phenomenal. I cannot give enough gratitude to the race directorate, the multitude of volunteers, and the HURT gang that helped me accomplish such a monumental goal. It just doesn't get any better than that! My race report follows, for those who might be intersted. Huge Mahalo to all!
Davey Crockett posted a great HURT race report on the Ultra list and he gave me permission to link it here. It includes photos and times and is very well written.
Click here to read his report.
Little known is the efforts of a few very very tired friends, who stuck around right after the race, and then came to the Nature Center the morning after, to deal with the aftermath of the mess we created there. I'm talking about Mike and Patricia, Joel and Stephanie, and the Huffer, who swept, mopped and cleaned the NC, helped load our U-haul to send home the NC aid station gear. If that was not enough, the next morning they hosed down the rest of the area, and dealt with the enormous task of handling U-haul contents from Nuuanu that we inherited. Trish single handily washed and scrubbed about 9 coolers, while, the rest sorted through the gear to toss and inventory, then drove the U-haul to a storage facility to pack it all for the time being, into a storage locker (to be dealt with later this month). I hear Joel was the master mind for systematically organizing the contents into the locker, leaving not even a square inch of space afterwards.
I have some video clips that were taken during the race. Some show parts of the trail and aid stations and others are interviews with either runners or pacers. These were shot with a Treo--basically a phone, so the quality is not professional but they are still fun to view.
Click here for the link. You will need Quicktime to view them.
Daren Sefcik sent me a link to a page on his web site with some great photo's of the H.U.R.T. 100 course. These were taken the day before the race. A great way to show friends where you spent your weekend.
Daren also has photo's from previous H.U.R.T. 100 races on his site too.

Aloha !
Utah's Karl Meltzer continued his recent dominace of many of the tough mountain 100's by winning the HURT 100 Trail Endurance Run in the record-breaking time of 22:16. Karl, known for his intense, focused running style and quick aid station transitions, was relaxed, smiling, and even cracked an occasional witty one-liner on the way to being the only person to break the 24 hour barrier. Jim Kirby proved his toughness by running a great race and took the 2nd spot. Excellent trail conditions, beautiful weather and a strong field of 86 talented runners from all over the world produced the most finishers ever, 23 (26%). The women's race record was also shattered by a gutsy performance from Beverly Anderson-Abbs, who spent much of the race with the front-running men. Local favorite Marian Yasuda surprised everyone, including herself, by taking second place (and was the first Hawaii finisher, overall) and the amazing Monica Scholz became the only runner to officially finish all 6 HURT 100 races. A large crowd of locals gathered at the finish line and went wild as Cheryl Loomis crossed the finish line. A party ensued, with a big tub of ice water being poured over Cheryl's head (ala football) and a champagne toast, The day was filled with many emotional moments watching so many tough competitors show so much determination and the ability to handle pain.
A big MAHALO to all the hard-working volunteers who make this great event possible, including HURT guru Big John Salmonson, who was still working Monday morning getting the race results posted, and to the wonderful PJ Salmonson. Thanks to everyone, it was the best HURT 100 ever !
Don
I am posting the final-final results from the 2006 H.U.R.T. 100. It was a great race overall with ideal conditions and fantastic competition. I think everyone had a great time at the dinner last night--a fun way to end the weekend.
If you have photo's from the race, please send them to me at kailuamac@yahoo.com and I will post them here for all to see.
Click here for the 100 mile results.
Click here for the 100K results. (Note, this is 2 pages)
See you out on the trails!
Aloha, Bob
The unofficial results are now posted. Click here to see them. It's nice to see that people were using this as a way to check results throughout the race. We will continue to look at ways to improve this service for future races.
So much for dry trails. It rained the entire time we were at the pre-race meeting today and I heard from someone who said it had rained most of the day at the Nature Center.
Lot's of new faces and people looking around and asking who's this and where's so-and-so. Stay tuned for updates.
The start of the 2006 H.U.R.T. 100 is less than 48 hours away. For those of us running it--Yikes! For those who are organizing it--double Yikes!! So many last minute details.
The weather is predicted to be sunny Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with rain predicted for Monday. The trade winds are up today (Thursday) and it is supposed to be cloudy today though the sun is out as I write this. Anytime the trade winds are blowing, rain is possible. The wind also drys out the course. Right now, conditions are looking like the course will be the driest it has ever been for a H.U.R.T. 100.
If you are here in Hawaii and are not participating in some way, try to stop by one of the aid stations this weekend. The aid stations are at the Hawaii Nature Center, Paradise Park in the back of Manoa Valley, and in Nuuanu, on old Pali road, by Jackass Ginger. Also, when you get ready to slip into your nice, comfortable, and warm bed on Saturday night, just know that a group of us will be out on the trails all night.
Certainly all the volunteers and organizers will be deserving of a big aloha and mahalo (thank you) for all they will be doing this weekend. Without them, this race would not happen.
We have some amazing athletes competing this weekend. I am not just talking about the top runners. That includes everyone who makes the decision to enter and participate. Good luck to all the participants.
We hope to be able to post updates here during the race so please check back. It all depends on us being able to connect via a wireless connection from the Start/Finish.
Aloha, Bob
A couple of more participants have been added to the H.U.R.T. 100 race. Click here for the latest (spell corrected) list.
Big John has assigned race bib numbers for H.U.R.T. 100 participants. Click here to see your number. This race is coming up fast. I guess I better get out and get some training done!
The list just keeps growing. Apparently a lot of people want to spend a weekend in January out on the trails here in Hawaii. This latest update includes past H.U.R.T. 100 winner, Mike Sweeney. Click here to see the list.
I hope you were lucky enough to get out on the trails over the last couple of days. I got in 60 miles over two days on the driest trails we have had in a long time.
Saturday the H.U.R.T. course was in awesome shape. Had the race been run over the last two days, I think we would have had some records set. I am not sure if the dry weather held all day for Sunday as I had some sprinkles driving over the Pali Highway in the middle of the afternoon on Sunday??
We had a very cool start (in fact I swear it was chilly enough to see my breath up on the Manoa Cliff Trail before sunrise.) and a good turnout as people realize this is the last big weekend for getting in miles before starting our taper. Cheryl, Gordon, Ed, plus rare appearances by Mike M. and Nick started off in the darkness. We had the light of an almost full moon give way to a brilliant orange sunrise. It was cool and dry all day. The pigs and pig hunters were also out in force.
It was fun passing so many people out enjoying their training day. People were doing all kinds of loops and additions trying to get in extra miles. I think it ranged from people doing 20 on up to 50 miles. I know another big group was training Sunday--Jeff, Murphy, Steve, Ben and Paul were all supposed to be out today.
The best laugh for me--someone--might have been his son?? said to me, "Greg has just left the Nature Center and is heading up Nahuina over to Paradise and if you hurry, you could probably catch him since he doesn't move that fast." First, I have never known Greg to be slow--in fact I have heard he only has one speed--fast. Second, this kid didn't know my legs had already run about 53 miles (over two days).. by that point in the weekend, there was no way I could catch him.
Finally, I also told someone this, if it stays this dry, we might have to get the fire department to drop water on the course in certain areas just to make it muddy. As we have heard someone say---We wouldn't want it to be easy!!
Thanks to PJ and Don for bringing out goodies and stashing drops for us.
Good Training, Bob
We're just a month away from the race and (click) here is the latest entrant list as of 12/15/05. Some new names, some familiar names, and ...???
Should be a great race this year!
Aloha, Bob
Here's the latest entrant list for the H.U.R.T. 100. Click here to see the list. Early entry deadline is 12/5/05. After that the price goes up. Get your entry in quick if you want to save some money. Applications are available to download on the right side under H.U.R.T. 100 Race Links.
This latest update shows five-time finishers Monica Scholz and Catra Corbertt are returning. Also Karl Metzler is on the list.
The trails are drying out--could be a very competitive and fast race in 2006!
Aloha Athletes !
Multi-Hardrock winner Karl Meltzer has entered the HURT 100. Karl has won several other 100 mile races and is especially known at Hardrock, where he holds the course record in both directions. With no one being able to break the 24 hour barrier at HURT to this point, it will be interesting to see if Karl can be the first to accomplish it.
Don
You can see the latest H.U.R.T. 100 entrant list by clicking here. There are 49 entrants as of today. If you are considering this race, now is the time to get your application in. Remember the entrance fee goes up after 12/5/05.
All of the race information, including entrance application, is available on the right side of this site, under the H.U.R.T. 100 Race Links section.
A non-running story………….Jeff Huff and I have season tickets to UH Basketball and see each other (across the court) at games all year. We have suffered many “almost” great years and have remained loyal as best we could.
This years opening game (Saturday) was against 4th ranked Michigan State and as is his practice Jeff came to say hello before the game…………..he then proceeded in a cocky manner (very unlike Jeff) to predict a UH victory. I immediately replied “ I’d love it, but it’s just not going to happen…..however if it does, I’ll kiss your ass in public”! As the game progressed and UH built a bigger and bigger lead, I could see Jeff gesturing to most of the people sitting near him pointing to his butt and his lips and pointing me out across the court………he had 10 people standing and pointing right at me………….yikes!!
Well we won by 22 points in one of the biggest sports upsets of the year, and because I was able to escape yesterday………….you might want to come to the HURT pre-race meeting in January.
John
In my mind, the best way to train for the H.U.R.T. 100 is to get out on the course and put in the miles. Of course, living here in Hawaii makes that easy, the course is 20 minutes from my house.
This past Saturday I ran two loops or 40 miles. It wasn't fast (or at least I am not fast) as the course was very wet and muddy, however the sun was out and as Ed says, "it's all good training." I needed to put in the miles and 12 hours later I felt good about what I had done!
Though I had company on the first loop, (Carl, a new Hawaii resident--thanks to the USAF and Marion for one of the legs), I was pretty much on my own for loop two. Three other runners were out on the course and also got 40 miles in (Ed, Gordon, and Marion), and it was nice to see them at various times throughout the day.
I am posting this H.U.R.T. 100 entrant list to let you know who is entered as of today. So far it looks like a lot of strong and fast women are planning on being in Honolulu on January 14th and 15th.
I've heard talk of someone breaking 24 hours this year? Who's going to do it first?
If you have not sent in your application, now is the time to do it!
The application can be downloaded here or from the right side of this page under H.U.R.T. 100 Race Links. There are also four runner related booklets to download if you are entering the H.U.R.T. 100.
Aloha, Bob
I just received a copy of the UltraRunning magazine ad for the H.U.R.T. 100. Click here to see it full size. Check it out--you might see some familiar faces!!
This is a good reminder to get those applications in and to make the commitment to step up your training (I am talking to myself here!) in preparation for the H.U.R.T. 100!
Applications and all race information is available under the heading H.U.R.T. 100 Race Links.
Good training! Aloha, Bob
Aloha Runners,
The HURT 100 B.O.D. met today and we have decided to use this forum to find pacers for the HURT 100 to be contested on January 14-15, 2006. Pacers are allowed 1 hour prior to sundown until the end of the race. Interested pacers should have knowledge of the trails and experience with night time running on those trails. Pay for pacers is limited to food from the aid stations and sincere gratitude from the sorry soul whose butt you will push across the finish line. Interested parties should contact John Salmonson at hurtpals@aol.com. It is a great way to get indoctrinated into the world of Ultrarunning.
Huffer
This was submitted by Rayna after her recent visit to Hawaii which included one H.U.R.T. loop. Rayna is running her first 100 mile race this coming weekend, the Vermont 100 mile Endurance Run.
Aloha (“love”) H.U.R.T.s
Previous trips to Hawaii have consisted of indulging in only three things: quality time with my ‘ohana (“family”), the beach, and food. Having recently added ultrarunning to my list of hobbies, I decided it would be lots of fun to join the Hawaii Ultrarunning Team (H.U.R.T.) on one of their Saturday training runs. I made contact with two of its members, Don Fallis and Bob McAllaster, and mentioned my interest in running with the group. Both were very welcoming and friendly, and I could feel the spirit of aloha…until Bob indicated plans to run one loop of the H.U.R.T. 100, a 5-loop course starting at the Hawaii Nature Center in Makiki.
Click on photo to enlarge it.
The dates for 2006 H.U.R.T TRAIL 100-MILE ENDURANCE RUN have been announced and set for January 14 & 15, 2006.
The race application and other details will be available within the next couple of weeks and posted on this site.
Please add these dates to your race calendar.
