Congrat's to a couple of past HURT 100 participants

This may be old news for some of you. David Goggins won the inaugural Twin Peaks 50 miler last weekend in S. California. This race was directed by Jessica Deline. More info and photos are here.

Beverly Anderson-Abbs won the Coastal Challenge in Costa Rica. More info is here.

Congratulations to these two fine runners.

Via e-mail from Frank MacMillan

I'm back on the mainland but I wanted to point out to the blog that David Carlsson not only completed 100k at HURT but a week later placed 'first' in the Hilo to Volcano run in case you guys didn't know.  Great work for a guy who a month ago was just trying to get under 3 hours at Honolulu Marathon (and he did).  I'm pretty sure this is the same guy (last name misspelled in Big Dog's results) as I talked to him before the race and he is the only David in the finishers.  He was camping near Akaka Falls and said ran into the New Mexico HURT runners.

I was still sore and could barely stay ahead of the Cowman though it was nice to have a course with only a few banyan roots in the first ½ mile.

This coming weekend several Hawaii ultra runners will be participating in three different races on the mainland. From Vermont to Colorado and Nevada (Lake Tahoe area). I'll be following up later this week with their names and hopefully links to allow you to track their progress. Hardrock starts Friday morning while the other two races start Saturday morning. As some of the runners will be leaving early this week, we want to wish them all best of luck! Run strong and do your best!!

The Official Uncensored Olo Mana Report

Winningupdated Click on photo for instant inspiration.  More photos to follow on the blog.

Written by Bob Murphy, subjected to rigorours review by Jeff Huff and Matt Stevens

I went diving with my son, Kevin on Saturday and I was pretty nervous (scared) when we did a 107 foot dive.  I told Jeff that’s the most frightened I’ve been in a couple of years. Well, the Sunday run beat that hands down.  Matt changed the run order – thank goodness – and we started on the Windward side.  It was a beautiful day (a little humid) and we were in good spirits running to the trail head.  My previous experience with Olomana with Don Fallis was basically a walk-up, but we turned around before the top due to rain.

Matt was leading the way, taking pictures and telling stories.  Jeff and I were trying to breathe and not die.  The way up the first peak was kind of dicey towards the top.  There were fix ropes to help you climb over the big rocks.  I have relatively strong legs, but the upper body strength of a small boy.  I was hanging on for dear life and cursing the lack of push-ups in my life.  The drops were unreal – straight down. Luckily, heights don’t bother me, but falling really does.  At the top of the first peak, we were pretty excited – an incredible view looking down the Windward side.

Keiki Triathlon--Jakob Dewald!!

We were at a surprise birthday party tonight for Darin Mingo and met Richard Varley. Richard is very much involved with Keiki triathlon in the islands and it just so happened that Jakob Dewald was a featured athlete in an article in the Star Bulletin today. Click here to read the article.

Jakob Click to enlarge the photo. Just look at Jakob's focus and determination. Talking with Richard tonight about Keiki triathlon, his enthusiasm is contagious. He had my daughter very interested in them. Richard is also the author of A Runners Guide to Oahu.

A Really Cool Story About HURT Shirts

I was out my office for some time today and when I returned I found an e-mail from John S. Here's what it said:

"Found this old story in Ultrarunning............written by Richard Senelly. Might want to post it as it tells a pretty accurate story of the mysterious HURT shirts. It was run about 10 years ago."

It really is a great story!! Click here to read it. Thanks John (and Richard) for sharing this!!

The race was this weekend and unfortunately that meant a few of us had to miss Bob's farewell.

Aloha and GOOD LUCK Bob.

The weather was pleasant and not too hot. A little wind, but all in all a great day for HURT. Nick Kaiser qualified once again as did Wendy Minor. Gil Loomis will be in Kona once again this October to do number 30! Congratulations to all three of you. Also to congratulations to all the other finishers.

For those who don't know, Honu is a triathlon that is 1/2 the distance of the Ironman. More info is available at www.ironmanlive.com

The race starts and ends at the corner of Makiki Street and Makiki Heights Drive in the park by the water pumping station. This is just down the road from the Nature Center. Click here for a map.

The second event, is the Bob Murphy Moving Away Potluck. More info is here. Essentially, this will be Bob's last race (Ladies: show up early for Bob's special touch with the marker!) before he moves to the mainland. Murphy Farewell Begins

Murphy_farewell_runAs many of you know, Bob Murphy is moving to the mainland. This past Saturday, the first of many farewell runs for Bob was organized. Karen (aka: SoccerMom), Barbi, Jen, and Kim joined Bob for a loop around the Mango Madness route. As you can see by the photo, Bob was in heaven! Four beautiful women, two of which, were trail virgins! I was only allowed to join them as the official photographer. (click photo to enlarge it)

Just Off To Run a 100 Miles

While many of us are getting ready for a nice three day weekend coming up with the Memorial Day Holiday, someone we all know is off  to run a 100 mile race!

I want to wish Don Fallis luck, success, strong legs, and best wishes as he heads out to Canada to run the Sulfur Springs 100 Mile Trail Race. Those of us who have talked with Don recently know he has been putting in some long miles in preparation for this race. What you may not know is that he decided to do this race just a few short weeks ago.

This race is in Monica Scholz's backyard so to speak and she talked Don into motivating himself to send in his application, make the travel plans, and get to the race. Don completed this race (with HURTpal Leon Draxler) back in 2004. We all look forward to hearing about the race.

Get Out and Run!, Aloha, Bob

This past Po'aono (Saturday), HURT members gathered to erect a bench at the top of Nuuanu Trail in memory of fellow runner, Kent Bien.

After all work was complete, we joined hands, formed a circle, and shared memories of Kent.  It was only fitting that our tribute was blessed with cool mountain rain.

My heartfelt thanks to Rod and Adam - your message to dad Kent was a beautiful tribute!  Thank you Aaron and Katie for your efforts to make this happen.  Mahalo to Mae for the beautiful hand-made leis!

Mahalo nui loa to all of you who could make the trek - it was wonderful to come together and reminisce about Kent!

Aid Station Report for Saturday Training

This past Saturday I volunteered to be the aid station at the Pali Lookout for the group running from Kailua to the Nature Center and back--a long 40+ mile day. (Having done this run last August, I know how long the day is!) I was told to expect the group around 2:00 p.m. so I thought I would get there a bit early just in case there were any gazelle's with the group who might be ahead of schedule.

The Pali Lookout was typical for a strong tradewind day--in other words chilly and very windy. Along to help were Barbi and Sara, as we planned to run with the group--in for an hour or so and then return to the lookout. Due to Barbi having a bit too much fun at her party Friday night, she was really in no shape to run and this was confirmed as soon as we reached the Lookout. You can ask her if you want the details.

Wendy Minor: Triathlete and Inspiration

Talk about an amazing lady, Wendy Minor was written about in Inside Triathlon magazine. I feel like a slug! She has 23 Ironman finishes, plus completing the double, Kona and Xterra. Great job Wendy! You are an inspiration! Read about her here.

HURT 100 Participant, Lisa de Speville at the Patagonia Adventure Race

Remember South African, Lisa de Speville? She has been writing about a grueling (read that as sounding really fun to me) adventure race at the southern tip of South America.

The Patagonia Expedition Race covers some of the most remote and unpopulated areas of southern Chile. Click here to read more about this great adventure.

Saturday Was Fun!!

This past Saturday was a really fun run--the last big group run before the H.U.R.T. 100. We did an easy reverse Trek route of 10 miles. The pace was supposed to be easy and we started off late for us--7:00 a.m.

I won't try to name everyone who was there since it was such a large group and I would surely slight someone by failing to mention their name. Unfortunately someone forgot to tell the lead runner we were supposed to take it easy. Of course, this particular lead runner was also one of the few out there who was not entered as a participant for the H.U.R.T. 100. He set a blistering pace and what was supposed to be an easy 2:30 or 3 hour run, turned into a 2:10 sprint. Who was this speedster?

The one and only Jacob Dewald! He was helped over big rocks and such by his dad, Steve. Steve would just pick Jacob up by his Camelback and lift him up over the rocks.

We ended the run with a great potluck and fun conversation. One week from right now, it will all be history! The 2006 H.U.R.T. 100 will be over. I hope I am healthy and over this nasty cold before then!

See you all soon. Aloha, Bob

Congratulations Filiesha!

Good News!

This morning, Judge Kevin Chang presided over citizenship ceremonies for 64 people from many different countries.

Filiesha LeRand, one of our local trail divas, has officially become an American citizen.  It was certainly a long process for her but well worth the effort.  All went well until we tried to enter the courtroom... each candidate had to state their official name for the record- first, middle, and last.

For all of you who know Fileisha,  she doesn't do things the easy way.  It took quite a bit of explaining for her to convince the clerk that she had no middle name, simply a middle initial!

When you see her out there on the trails, please congratulate Filiesha on her accomplishment!

Xterra Results and Wet Trails!

Steve Dewald and Hurtpal Wendy Minor completed their double (Ironman + Xterra) this past weekend by participating in the Xterra World Championships on Maui. This race consists of a 1500 meter swim, a 30K mountain bike and a 10K trail run.

Steve had a time of 4:05. Wendy got special mention in the race report:

"Wendy Minor became the "oldest" woman to do the Hawaiian Airlines Double, finishing Ironman in 13:50:17 and XTERRA today in 5:06:43 for a combined 18:57:00." Wow, way to go Wendy!!

H.U.R.T. 100 participant, Willie Stewart also completed the race with a time of 3:57.

There were several other Hawaii participants. Check out the results at this link. Congratulations to all the competitors!!!

This past Saturday, several H.U.R.T. runners were out on the loop. We were all surprised to see Nick Kaiser out doing a "recovery" run after competing in the Ironman just the week before. This guy is amazing!!

It was muddy and sloppy on the trails. This didn't slow down the speedsters much. I heard from Paul Sibley that he and Ed Bugarin ran the loop in about 4:35. With all the rain over the last day or so, conditions will not be drying out anytime soon.

Happy training! Aloha, Bob

H.U.R.T. Contributes to Katrina!

We have probably all been glued to CNN this past week and each of us has been touched in some way by what we have seen in the aftermath of the devastation and heartbreak caused by Katrina.

Roger Wrublik (a HURT Veteran and finisher) has organized a relief effort in support of Dr. Tyler Curiel. Tyler is a physician and ultra runner who was featured on CNN this past week after he (and others) came under gunfire from thugs in New Orleans as he tried to evacuate patients from Charity Hospital.

In support of Tyler and all of the victims of Katrina, I have made a $500 donation on behalf of H.U.R.T. through Roger's organization. Roger believes that since Tyler is right there, he can make the best decision on where the money should be spent.

Birthday Run Thanks!

I just want to thank everyone who came out to support and run in Sunday's training run. It was a beautiful day on the trails and lots of runners (See below for the some of the names) took advantage to get out on the trails. First, thanks to Don Fallis and Cheryl Loomis (and their spouses) for letting them switch their training day to Sunday. They accompanied me on this entire journey and were real strong all the way to the finish.

Thanks to Rex and Kat and John and PJ for supply refreshingly cool drinks and food along the way!

A big mahalo goes to my wife Barbi and family for making the finish extra special with a great feast for the finish!!

Thank You Kelly

Just wanted to say thanks to Kelly Hupp for a great job a few weeks ago with the Keiki triathlon.

My kids have done most of the races for the past few years and I gotta say this was the best race yet.

It was well oranized and run as well as a safe venue for such an event. We had many friends also racing who expressed similar praises. I truly hope the Hale Koa will host this event again and

maybe even more like it. Thanks again Kelly!

Two other H.U.R.T. runners were MIA (missing in action) from this past weekend's Mango Madness race. Their where-abouts have now been confirmed.

Marian and Neal Yasuda were in San Diego running in the Rock and Roll Marathon. This is a big race with over 17,000 finishers.

Marian ran a 3:53 and Neal's time was 4:07. Great job!

A Note from H.U.R.T. Friends

From John and PJ

For those that don't know "Marathon John", he is a great friend to HURT.
Before he left Hawaii 4-5 years ago, he did an enormous amount of work for our races, and contributed equipment that we still use in our races today.

For instance, one year at the Schofeild 50 Miler, he brought a bunch of his soldiers with him, and they put up a big tent for us to use during the race. Not only that, but they brought tables and chairs for us, coolers, etc. After the race, they took it all down and hauled it away! I remember he did the same thing for Triple Trek one year. He could never do enough for us.

We've been keeping in touch, hoping he and his family would get back here. Some day that will happen. Here is a recent note from him.

Steve Dewald and other Hawaii Athletes at the Inaugural Arizona Ironman

The inaguaral Arizona Ironman triathlon was this past Saturday, (4/9/05) and H.U.R.T. members (past and present plus friends of H.U.R.T. members) did well.

Steve Dewald completed the race in 11:49.01. Showing his H.U.R.T. legs, Steve ran a 4:15.45 marathon to end the race. Wow! Congratualtions and way to go Steve!!

Other times:

  • Collette Haney: 12:15.12
  • Kelley Hupp: 12:21.42
  • Wendy Minor: 14:35.48

Congratulations to all of these competitors. It sounds like the race was tough, with some strong winds, and a confusing end to the bike portion of the race. Almost 1800 athletes participated in this race held in Tempe, Arizona.

Dean Karnazes Transcript from Endurance Radio

Dean K. has been getting lots of press. Those of you who subcribe to the Ultra list have probably read about his upcoming book tour. It seems not all ultra runners are in favor of the press Dean is bringing to the sport or they are just jealous of how he has been able to capitalize on it.

Personally I don't have a problem with it. Here is a link (http://www.enduranceradio.com/transcripts/03-04-05_Dean_Karnazes.htm) to the transcript of an interview Dean did today on Endurance Radio.

There is even a reference that women make better ultra runners. Hmmm, what do you think?
