Congrat's to a couple of past HURT 100 participants

This may be old news for some of you. David Goggins won the inaugural Twin Peaks 50 miler last weekend in S. California. This race was directed by Jessica Deline. More info and photos are here.

Beverly Anderson-Abbs won the Coastal Challenge in Costa Rica. More info is here.

Congratulations to these two fine runners.

Via e-mail from Frank MacMillan

I'm back on the mainland but I wanted to point out to the blog that David Carlsson not only completed 100k at HURT but a week later placed 'first' in the Hilo to Volcano run in case you guys didn't know.  Great work for a guy who a month ago was just trying to get under 3 hours at Honolulu Marathon (and he did).  I'm pretty sure this is the same guy (last name misspelled in Big Dog's results) as I talked to him before the race and he is the only David in the finishers.  He was camping near Akaka Falls and said ran into the New Mexico HURT runners.

I was still sore and could barely stay ahead of the Cowman though it was nice to have a course with only a few banyan roots in the first ½ mile.

Hawaii Runs to The Mainland

This coming weekend several Hawaii ultra runners will be participating in three different races on the mainland. From Vermont to Colorado and Nevada (Lake Tahoe area). I'll be following up later this week with their names and hopefully links to allow you to track their progress. Hardrock starts Friday morning while the other two races start Saturday morning. As some of the runners will be leaving early this week, we want to wish them all best of luck! Run strong and do your best!!

The Official Uncensored Olo Mana Report

Winningupdated Click on photo for instant inspiration.  More photos to follow on the blog.

Written by Bob Murphy, subjected to rigorours review by Jeff Huff and Matt Stevens

I went diving with my son, Kevin on Saturday and I was pretty nervous (scared) when we did a 107 foot dive.  I told Jeff that’s the most frightened I’ve been in a couple of years. Well, the Sunday run beat that hands down.  Matt changed the run order – thank goodness – and we started on the Windward side.  It was a beautiful day (a little humid) and we were in good spirits running to the trail head.  My previous experience with Olomana with Don Fallis was basically a walk-up, but we turned around before the top due to rain.

Matt was leading the way, taking pictures and telling stories.  Jeff and I were trying to breathe and not die.  The way up the first peak was kind of dicey towards the top.  There were fix ropes to help you climb over the big rocks.  I have relatively strong legs, but the upper body strength of a small boy.  I was hanging on for dear life and cursing the lack of push-ups in my life.  The drops were unreal – straight down. Luckily, heights don’t bother me, but falling really does.  At the top of the first peak, we were pretty excited – an incredible view looking down the Windward side.

Keiki Triathlon--Jakob Dewald!!

We were at a surprise birthday party tonight for Darin Mingo and met Richard Varley. Richard is very much involved with Keiki triathlon in the islands and it just so happened that Jakob Dewald was a featured athlete in an article in the Star Bulletin today. Click here to read the article.

Jakob Click to enlarge the photo. Just look at Jakob's focus and determination. Talking with Richard tonight about Keiki triathlon, his enthusiasm is contagious. He had my daughter very interested in them. Richard is also the author of A Runners Guide to Oahu.

Another Great Story from the Past

John sent me another story this week written by Richard Senelly. These are great! This one was published in Ultrarunning sometime in 1989. It's entitled Searching for Challenge: A Hero in My Own Mind.

A Really Cool Story About HURT Shirts

I was out my office for some time today and when I returned I found an e-mail from John S. Here's what it said:

"Found this old story in Ultrarunning............written by Richard Senelly. Might want to post it as it tells a pretty accurate story of the mysterious HURT shirts. It was run about 10 years ago."

It really is a great story!! Click here to read it. Thanks John (and Richard) for sharing this!!

HONU REPORT

The race was this weekend and unfortunately that meant a few of us had to miss Bob's farewell.

Aloha and GOOD LUCK Bob.

The weather was pleasant and not too hot. A little wind, but all in all a great day for HURT. Nick Kaiser qualified once again as did Wendy Minor. Gil Loomis will be in Kona once again this October to do number 30! Congratulations to all three of you. Also to congratulations to all the other finishers.

For those who don't know, Honu is a triathlon that is 1/2 the distance of the Ironman. More info is available at www.ironmanlive.com
